Some Boko Haram terrorists detained by the
Nigerian army
Some Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) have
accused Nigerian politicians of sponsoring Boko
Haram terrorists operating in the north east.
Speaking in Abuja, the CSOs said the politicians are
sabotaging the President Muhammadu Buhari-led
administration’s effort towards fight terrorism in
Nigeria.
The CSOs said some of these politicians especially
stakeholders from Borno state, send conflicting
signals over their readiness for a “post Boko Haram
phase” in the region.
Speaking at the meeting, the chairman of the group,
Stephen Onwu, said the stakeholders in Borno have
not shown any zeal in seeing the end of terrorism in
the region.
He said there is deliberate effort by these
stakeholders to prevent stall the flushing of
terrorists out of Nigeria.
“There are appointed and political office holders that
are exploiting the situation to further their own
agenda to the detriment of national interest and
collective security of all Nigerians,”
“There is implication for these Boko Haram
sponsors to further ingratiate themselves to the
government of the day and we will have a repeat of
what transpired under the past administration again
where terrorism became a full-fledged business,”
the group added.
The group consisting of 13 CSOs commended the
Nigerian military for their effort in the fight against
terrorism.
The group however said that there are other
emerging security breaches that need a rapid
progression to the next logical phase of military
operation in Borno State.
These breaches the group said include the
resurgence of militancy in the Niger Delta.
The group also called for investigation into the roles
played by politicians and foreigners in the
insurgency since the emergence of the Boko Haram
terrorists group.
It also called on the government to ensure that
resources are effectively committed into the
development of the region.
