The woman’s sister, a priest and a Capuchin monk also confirmed the strange behavior, adding that they had even seen her throw a church pew towards the altar with just one hand.
The husband said these episodes of "demonic possession" drove him to seek divorce from his wife, with whom he has two children. In view of reports by doctors and psychiatrists, the judge ruled that the woman was healthy and the incidents could therefore not be attributed to illness. In addition, the court heard that exorcists had tried praying for the woman but the incidents kept recurring. The judge therefore granted the man a no-fault divorce from his wife. Italy, a staunchly Catholic country, had no provision for divorce until 1970. Further relaxations in the periods of official separation to just one year—and six months in case of mutual separation—have seen a 57 percent surge in divorce rates in the country.
